JAGIROAD, Aug 4 - The Kagaj Nigam Karmi Union of Nagaon Paper Mill under HPCL will resort to hunger strike from 2 pm on August 14 to 5 pm of August 15 at the mills main gate in support of their demands.
The demands include revival of both the mills in Assam, namely Nagaon Paper Mill at Jagiroad in Morigaon district and Cachar Paper Mill at Panchgram in Karimganj district, release pending monthly salaries and other statutory dues.
This was disclosed by the general secretary of KNKU, NPM, Ananda Bordoloi at a press meet held here today. He added that the union will also launch a road blockade programme over NH-37 here from 10 am to 2 pm on August 17.
In a memorandum, the KNKU stated that the Government at the Centre and the State stopped functioning of both the heavy industries of Assam. As a result, 1,600 direct employees and about 2 lakh people of the State have lost employment. As many as 36 employees of the industries met premature death while in service due to non-receipt of salaries. The employees are facing starvation due to unbearable financial hardship. On the other hand, the academic career of the employees children have been destroyed. The union has therefore decided to launch a major democratic movement to protect the rights and interests of the affected workers, the memorandum added.
It may be mentioned that the CPM and NPM were closed down on October 28, 2015 and March 13, 2017 respectively. The employees of CPM and NPM have not received their monthly salaries since January and March, 2017 respectively.
