By Correspondent

SHILLONG, Nov 24 - The Hill State Peoples Democratic Party (HSPDP) today retained the Nongstoin Assembly seat with its candidate Diosstarness Jyndiang defeating his nearest Congress rival Gabriel Wahlang by 2,764 votes.

HSPDP candidate Jyndiang polled 11,189 votes, while his rival polled 8,425 votes. The other two candidates, Mosklander Marngar of United Democratic Party polled 1,257 votes and Independent candidate Fenela Lyngdoh Nonglait polled 3,131 votes. Marngar and Nonglait had to surrender their security deposits.

The by-elections, held on Friday, witnessed a high polling percentage of 81. 96.

The HSPDP retaining the seat came as no big surprise as the partys founder and senior State politician Hopingstone Lyngdoh has held the seat for a record nine terms. His demise on September 26 necessitated the by-poll.
