GUWAHATI, Nov 20 � Governor Janaki Ballav Patnaik, who is also the Chancellor of Gauhati University (GU), has appointed Professor Hari Prasad Sarma as Rector of the University for a period of five years. The terms and condition of the appointment of Prof Sarma will be fixed by the University authorities, said the notification issued by the Governor�s Secretariat in this connection.
�The Rector shall exercise such powers and perform such duties of the Vice-Chancellor as may, from time to time, be delegated to him by the Vice-Chancellor,� the notification said, while describing the powers and functions of the Rector.
Prof HP Sarma was the ex-Head and Professor of the Department of Environmental Science, GU. He was also an ex- president of the Gauhati University Teachers� Association (GUTA). Currently, he is a member of the Executive Council as well as Academic Council of both GU and Kumar Bhaskar Barma Sanskrit Universities.
