AGARTALA, May 29 � Tripura has substantially improved the institutional delivery rate by registering 83 percent birth at government-run hospitals � which is highest among the Northeastern States.
In 2010-11, the State had registered around 52,000 deliveries out of which 38,000 births took place in the government hospitals, according to official sources.
The improvement in the institutional delivery rate has been possible because of initiatives taken up under the banner of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), said Dr KV Dey, member secretary of the State Mission, NRHM.
�We are happy that the State mission had registered success in the reduction of maternal fertility rate which is one of the main objectives of the national flagship programme�, Dr Dey said.
Asserting that ASHA workers have been doing enough to bring all the expectant mothers to the government-run health centres for providing better medial aid to them, Dey said that the NRHM State organisation would continue to improve the rate even further.
There has also been a remarkable improvement in arresting infant mortality rate in the State. While the infant mortality rate stands at 53 per 1,000 at the national level, this is only 31 per 1,000 in the State as per the Sample Registration System (SRS) conducted by the State�s Health department. �Our target for the next year � 2011-12 will be to 25 per 1000�, said Dr Dey.
The NRHM authority has set up a target of setting up Sub-Centre in each Gram Panchayat as well Village Committee (Autonomous District Council) by 2012. The Sub Centre will have facilities as per the Indian Public Health Standard (IPHS).
