Hoping Stone Lyngdoh laid to rest

SHILLONG, Sept 29 - Thousands of people bid a tearful adieu to veteran leader Hoping Stone Lyngdoh today, as his mortal remains was laid to rest at his native village Mawkyllei, Pariong in West Khasi Hills district.

A State funeral was accorded to Lyngdoh at the Dorbar Hall of Lyngdoh Nonglait. Political leaders, relatives and the public paid floral tributes and later the casket of Lyngdoh was handed to the church leader of Mawkyllei Presbyterian Church.

One of the longest serving legislators, Lyngdoh�s mortal remains was taken to the church and thereafter a short service followed at the burial ground.

Lyngdoh, founder of the Hill State People�s Democratic Party (HSPDP) and an important leader of the Hill State Movement in the 70s to fight for Meghalaya�s statehood, passed away on September 26 here.

Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, Assembly Speaker Abu Taher Mondal, Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president DD Lapang, Cabinet Ministers Roshan Warjri, AL Hek, Leader of the Opposition Donkupar Roy and other legislators and officials attended the funeral.

Paying his tribute, the Chief Minister recalled Lyngdoh as �a man of principle� and always worked hard for the welfare of the people.

Sangma said Lyngdoh wanted solution to the inter-state boundary issue with Assam. In this regard, the Chief Minster said, that in 2010 after the border disputes in Langpih, Lyngdoh was happy after the State Government deputed police force in Langpih.

MPCC president and adviser to the State Government, DD Lapang, said, Lyngdoh was a man who believed in his work speaking for him.

HSPDP Legislator Ardent Basaiawmoit said the party and the State have lost a great leader and he will always be remembered by the people.

Basaiawmoit assured that the party would continue to work in fulfilling the pending issues that were close to the heart of Lyngdoh and the HSPDP will never let him down in this regard.
