Hooch claims 7 lives in Golaghat district

JORHAT, June 3 - Seven people, including a woman, in Barpathar subdivision of Golaghat district have reportedly died consuming hooch in the past 48 hours with one death early this morning.

Since Friday night several people of Singimari and adjoining villages under Barpathar police station started falling critically ill after consuming illicit liquor. They were admitted to local government hospital and in the last two days, seven have reportedly died.

Golaghat Deputy Commissioner Gaurav Bothra has directed district superintendent of excise Bhaben Phukon to visit the area. A magisterial inquiry into the incident has also been instituted and Dhansiri SDO (Civil) Bipul Das has been directed to conduct the probe.

Meanwhile, police have detained two persons � one suspected of supplying the hooch and another reportedly selling it from his kiosk near the affected villages.
