Homoeopath doubling up as asst surgeon held

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, March 8 - The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today arrested a homoeopathic practitioner who has been doubling up as an assistant surgeon in the Marwari Hospitals at Athgaon, putting lives of patients in danger.

Acting on specific information, sleuths of the CID arrested Dr Lokman Hekim from the hospital premises. Hekim was about to assist the surgeon in a surgery when he was picked up.

Sources informed that Dr Hekim, who hails from Barpeta, was working as an assistant surgeon for about three years.

Questions are now being raised on the effectiveness of the regulatory authorities mandated to overview the functioning of hospitals in the State.

Investigators also claimed that the hospital management too was in the know of things, but opted to keep the matter under the wraps.

A case (10/18) has been registered with the CID against Hekim, who will be produced before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate tomorrow.

Sarat Jain, general secretary of the Marwari Databya Aushadhalaya (which runs the hospital), said that Dr Hekim is not on a payroll of the hospital and it was only at the behest of the on-duty surgeon (gynaecologist) that his services were hired and the hospital had no say in it.

Dr Anil Kalita, Medical Superintendent of the hospital, claimed that although a decision was taken to disassociate him from the hospital, it could not be materialised. He conceded that Dr Hekims services was being availed by the hospital for the last two-and-half years.
