Hiren Bhattacharjya remembered at Gauripur

GAURIPUR, July 8 - Under the auspices of the Gauripur branch Sahitya Sabha, the fourth death anniversary of famous poet Hiren Bhattacharjya, popularly known as Hiruda was observed by organising a memorial meet on the premises of the Gauripur Public Library on July 4.

After garlanding the portrait of the poet of �Sugandhi Pakhila� by the president of the branch, an earthen lamp was lit by Sabuj Chakraborty, the seniormost member of the Sabha.

The memorial meet held on the occasion was presided over by Satyabarta Chakrabarty, president of the branch Sahitya Sabha. Manas Chakrabarty, ex-secretary of the Sabha explained the purpose of the meeting.

Several members of the branch paid homage to the Sahitya Akademi Award winning poet, Hiren Bhattacharjya.

The president in his speech dwelt at length on the contributions of the poet in the field of modern poetry. He also told the house that Hiruda received a number of awards during his lifetime, including the Raghunath Chaudhury Award in 1976, Bishnu Rabha Award in 1985, Soviet Land Nehru Award in 1987, Sahitya Akademi Award in 1992 and Assam Valley Literary Award in 2000. He also said that these awards proved his genius in composing poems, which are widely acclaimed.

The Dhubri Sahitya Sabha also observed the Day by organising a memorial meet and paid tributes to the poet.
