Hike in allocations for NE connectivity demanded

By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, Dec 28 - A parliamentary panel has strongly recommended that allocations for increasing connectivity in the north-eastern region must be enhanced and concerted efforts should be made to increase transport services in the region, as well as to improve connectivity with the mainland.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee attached to the Ministry of Home Affairs has endorsed the Home Secretarys views about the inadequacy of helicopter services in the North-east and felt that there is certainly a need to increase the number of helicopter services in the north-eastern region, which would result in enhanced subsidies in terms of the outlay, it said.

During the current financial year, allocation of Rs 76.45 crore was made. The Government of Manipur has requested to provide helicopter services in the region under the MHAs 75 per cent subsidy scheme. The proposal of the Government of Manipur is under examination, the parliamentary panel was told.
