High-security vehicle number plates by May

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, April 4 Every new vehicle that would hit the road from May 1 in Guwahati will have the High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP), a senior Transport official said.

The existing vehicles will also have to comply within a specified time.

The first phase of affixing in the motor vehicles will begin from the April 30 as per the Supreme Court direction, said the official, adding that a schedule is being drawn by the department as per which vehicle owners will have to visit the office of the District Transport Officer to get the old registration plate replaced by the HSRP.

The process will start from Guwahati and replicated across the State, as it is being done in the rest of the country.

The official said that the HSRP would have laser hologram and a non-removable and non non-reusable lock to prevent counterfeiting and duplication.

Besides, the HSRP will have a unique identification number, through which the vehicle could be tracked from across India, making it virtually impossible to steal and reuse vehicle, as it is rampant in the State, he pointed out.

The machines have arrived and we are waiting for the experts to come. Though it would be difficult to specify the exact time, we should be able to introduce the project in the first week of May, if not before, another official involved with registration wing of the office of the DTO (Kamrup) said.

He further stated that the car dealers too have been apprised and no number could issued without going through the procedure chalked out to affix the HSRP.
