High-level meet discusses ways to curb poaching in KNP

KAZIRANGA, March 7 - A high-level coordination committee meeting was held at the Forest Convention Centre today at Kohora to discuss ways to check the poaching of rhinos and other wild animals.

A senior official later informed that the meeting had decided to adopt measures to protect rhinos and other wild animals . Recently a matured rhino was killed and the carcass was recovered after a couple of days at Lahori chapori which falls under Golaghat Forest division.

The meeting which was attended by Principal Chief Conservator of Forest ( PCCF) NK Vasu, DIG Northern Range Lachit Baruah and DIG Central Range Bishnu Prasad Rabha along with SPs and DFOs of adjoining districts, decided to gear up the security measures on the riverbank areas of the Kaziranga National Park. Temporary forest and security camps will be set up at the vulnerable places to check poaching activities. It was also decided to check the activities of the anti-social elements, especially in various chaporis of the Brahmaputra river.

Strategies were planned to protect wild animals during flood in Kaziranga.

The meeting also decided to intensify routine checking in the areas. �If necessary, we will set up temporary check posts at the entry points of the park,� the source added.
