By Correspondent

SILCHAR, March 9 - In a bid to undertake and execute meaningful researches on the heritage and trade of glorious past by placing due emphasis on exploration of the social, cultural, economic and business history of North East, the JL Nehru School of Management Studies at Assam University Silchar launched the Centre for Heritage and Business Studies (CHBS) on Wednesday.

Also, in a first of its kind initiative, the Department came up with the Heritage Calendar 2017. The calendar was ceremoniously released by Professor Dilip Chandra Nath, Vice-Chancellor of Assam University, Silchar. The calendar is the outcome of a joint research initiative with North Eastern Centre for Advanced Studies Silchar.

Speaking on the occasion, Professor Nath said, We must be in close proximity to our heritage. A proposal shall be made to the UGC to introduce a chair in the name of Pandit Rajmohan Nath for the centre.

Professor Apurbananda Mazumdar, Dean of JL Nehru School of Management Studies, said, The initiative started about a decade back. The drive was prompted by the need of rediscovering Indias legacies in the business management sciences. There is an overreaching presence of a power triangle including three elements the State, the religious authority and the business, trade and commerce of the region, Barak Valley in particular.

Further, Professor Mazumdar mentioned that since every small region is a part of some bigger region, it is important to tap the history of the region in its entirety and thus the idea of launching the CHBS. He added to inform that experts from other disciplines like history, archaeology, geography philosophy linguistics anthropology from other universities have stepped up and are eager to involve themselves in the Centres proposed range of activities which include history of trade, urbanisation, Buddhist studies, Jain studies, heritage resources and tourism, Ayurveda and environment together with geographic focus on North East and eastern India and the neighbouring countries.

On the other hand, speaking about the Heritage Calendar, the director of CHBS said that six heritage sites of Barak Valley and Tripura have been projected in the calendar which are lesser known venues and yet replete with past glory of the region.
