Heavy rains trigger flash floods in Moreh

By Correspondent

IMPHAL, Oct 11 - Incessant rainfall on Monday night along the Manipur-Myanmar border has triggered flash floods in the border town of Moreh.

However, there has been no report of any human casualty.

According to reports reaching here, the water level of the Khujairok river along the Manipur-Myanmar increased significantly following the heavy downpour which lasted for nearly two hours on Monday night. As a result, houses along the river side, particularly Moreh-Khunou Leikai, Ward No 7, Heinou Makhong Leikai and Muslim Nagar were badly affected.

The border post guard of the 8 Manipur Rifles was also not spared by the flash floods, even as the water level of the river was reported to be receding on Tuesday.

The flash floods also razed a couple of houses at Chavangphai village in the border town. Similarly, a wooden bridge which connects the tribal village with Ward No 5 was also washed away. Some of the residents of Moreh locality also informed that they managed to save some livestock.

Police and rescue workers have been engaged in the relief and rescue works.

Bandh on highway: Meanwhile, an indefinite bandh along the Imphal-Jiribam sector of the National Highway (NH) 37 has been called from October 11 midnight following the governments alleged failure to repair the 222-km route within the stipulated time. Stating that even the Centre had once assured that necessary steps have been taken to repair the NH-37 within 100 days, president Singamlung Dangmei of Rongmei Naga Youth Organisation (RNYO), announcing the bandh, said that the highway is the lifeline of many people.

RNYO had urged the State Government to initiate the repair work of a 4-kilometre stretch along the NH-37 within a week. Not only did the State Government fail to undertake any step, but it also remained silent over the peoples earnest demand. The decision to call the indefinite bandh was taken not only by the Rongmei community but by all the people settled in the area, he added.

The Information Centre for Hill Areas Manipur has supported the movement launched by RNYO, according to its president N Rajendro. The Transporters and Drivers Union had also announced a cease-work in protest against the deplorable road condition of the highway.
