DIBRUGARH, Sept 4 - The school headmistress of St Mary�s School, Naharkatia, Sister Rancy Sebastian was arrested on Sunday in connection with the recent suicide of a minor girl student of the school.�

The girl named Namrata Sharma of Class VII had committed suicide in Burhi Dehing river by jumping from the Gabhoru bridge. Police had demanded seven-day police remand from the court but was denied due to her illness.

The headmistress, a senior nun was arrested from a hospital in Tinsukia by a team of police led by Namrup Deputy Superintendent of Police Ashif Ahmed.

Parents and sympathisers of the deceased girl have alleged that the headmistress� behaviour caused the girl to commit suicide. However, the school authorities, teachers and a section of parents have rejected all allegations against the school headmistress and demanded her unconditional release. Some people with vested interest are trying to drag the headmistress into the case despite knowing that she is not at all involved, large number of parents who held a meeting in the school told The Assam Tribune.
