HC rejects Rumis anticipatory bail plea

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 10 Arrest of Congress legislator Dr Rumi Nath appears imminent with the Gauhati High Court today rejecting both the interim anticipatory bail applications moved by her.

Two cases were registered against the Borkhola MLA after her links with notorious car lifter Anil Chauhan surfaced following the latters arrest in Guwahati recently. Dr Nathsestranged husband Jacky Zakir and her PSO are already in police custody.

Dr Nath was also sought an explanationby the State Secretariat forrecommending issuance of car passes for the State Assembly premises in the name of the countrys most-wanted criminal Chauhan, who was arrested and booked under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code besides Arms Act and the Wildlife Protection Act.

While the first interim bail application moved in connection with the case registered with the Dispur Police Station was heard yesterday, the second case of Azara Police Station was listed today.

The court rejected both the interim bail pleas today. Public prosecutor Ziaul Kamar contended that the cases linked with the Congress legislator could have international ramifications and to bring the cases into logical conclusions, it would be necessary for the investigators to question the accused.

The public Prosecutor further apprised the court that as the cases were also registered under the Arms Act and the Wildlife Protection Act, the gravity of the crime could be easily gauged and hence interim bail should not be allowed.

Further, counter-arguing the defence lawyers contentions, the prosecution reasoned that the very fact that police entered a high security zone like the MLA hostel in search of the accused suggests that the investigators have enough evidence to question the Congress MLA.

Rumi Nath was represented by advocate S Dey.
