MANGALDAI, Dec 29 - Just at a time when publication of the first NRC draft list is at its final stage, the NRC authority in Darrang district has been served an order by the Gauhati High Court to ensure the removal of the name of a resident of No. 4 Sialmarikhuti village under the Dalgaon Police Station who was recently declared an illegal foreigner.

The High Court had declared one Jelekha Khatun, wife of Abdul Rashid of Sialmarikhuti village, as an illegal foreigner. In pursuance of its order, the court directed the State NRC coordinator and the NRC authority of Darrang district not to enter Khatuns name in the proposed draft.

The district NRC authority on Thursday identified the woman as an illegal foreigner. It may be mentioned here that the Foreigners Tribunal (5th) of Mangaldai in Darrang district in its case (No. 195/2006) on March 10, 2008, declared Khatun an illegal foreigner for her failure to appear in court.

However, through a writ petition, she later challenged the verdict in the High Court. However, the High Court upheld the order.
