Hawkers strike to continue as talks fail

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 19 The office of the States Labour Commissioner here said, in its report to the State Government today, that the ongoing process of negotiation between the newspaper agents and newspaper hawkers of the city has failed, even as the strike of the hawkers completed the third consecutive day today.

According to the Additional Labour Commissioner DK Das, the District Labour Office today informed the Labour Commissioner of the failure of the negotiation process. The process was on since February 2. The office of the Labour Commissioner sent its report to the State Government under Section 12(4) of the Industrial Disputes Act.

Now, it is the discretion of the State Government to refer or not to refer the case to the Industrial Tribunal to adjudicate the dispute between the newspaper agents and the newspaper hawkers.

If the government feels it necessary to refer the case to the Tribunal, it may refer the case to it. In case it does not feel it necessary, it may not refer the case to the Tribunal.

But in the second case, the government will have to inform both the parties of this decision, Das said, referring to the legal provisions.

The report of the Labour Commissioners office was sent to the government this afternoon and it is expected to reach the State Secretariat in the early hours tomorrow, Das said.
