Hawkers call off strike

GUWAHATI, Feb 23 � The All Guwahati Hawkers� Association, which had refrained from distribution of newspapers for the last eight days over some commission issues with the agents, today decided to call off the strike at the request of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity (KMSS) and the intellectual circles in the city.

Addressing the media on the KMSS office premises, the association said that it would intensify its agitation against the agents in due course of time.

The secretary of the association, Kamaluddin Ahmed said that the strike has been called off at the request of KMSS and the intellectual circles.

Meanwhile, KMSS president Akhil Gogoi said that the request was made in view of their protest programme tomorrow.

He also said that all the demands of the hawkers are legitimate and should be accepted.

�In fact, I am for giving the hawkers facilities like Provident Fund and ESI,� Gogoi said.

Gogoi also announced that the KMSS will join hands with the hawkers in their protest against the agents if they do not pay heed to the legitimate demands.
