TEZPUR, July 26 A hardcore ULFA cadre of Paresh Baruah faction, Rittik Hazarika @ Rajib Lahon was apprehended in a joint operation by 44 Assam Rifles and Sonitpur Police at Gingia near Behali under Gingia Police outpost of Biswanath subdivision in Sonitpur district at around 4 am today.

One 9mm pistol along with two magazines and two mobile phones have been recovered from his possession. Rittik, son of Suren Hazarika of Bam Beseria of Tezpur who belonged to a very poor family, joined ULFA in 1991 and he was in charge of political wing for the North bank. As per our input the ULFA cadre entered Sonitpur district a couple of days back with a view to mobilising the people particularly on the northern part of the district for strengthening the Paresh Baruah faction of the outfit through new recruitments, Sonitpur SP, AP Tiwary said.

Replying to a query on any ULFA threat just before Independence Day and Martyrs day of the organization, Tewary stated that security has been beefed up and a vigorous operation has been conducted for the last few days in the district so that no incident takes place.
