Hara-Gouri temple spruced for New Years Day

By Correspondent

BAIHATA CHARIALI, Dec 31 The Hara-Gouri temple is a place of belief for brides and grooms. It is located at Tetelia, about 25 km from Guwahati, under the Hajo LAC in Kamrup district.

A visit to the temple gives immense pleasure to believers and devotees.

As the name Hara-Gouri suggests, the place is a shrine of Lord Shiva and Parvati. Set amidst an open space surrounded by trees and fields, it attracts a lot of tourists and visitors throughout the year.

There are four deities, Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, Lord Kartika and Parvati in the temple though people mainly worship only Lord Shiva and Parvati. In order to worship the deities every year, especially on the first day of the New Year, thousands of visitors throng the temple. Some of them also celebrate the New Years Day by arranging mass feasts, nagara naam, etc.

To celebrate the New Year and receive visitors tomorrow, the temple committee has made sufficient arrangements. A cleanliness drive was conducted in the temple campus by the members of the temple committee and utensils for preparing feasts for visitors have been obtained. People coming to the temple need not bring utensils as the committee of the temple provides almost all utensils needed for feasts. To maintain discipline, a number of volunteers will be engaged on the day for the convenience of the visitors.

The temple committee receives subscriptions from every family in the village and prepares mass feasts for them and the volunteers engaged in the temple. Though the temple has been attracting a number of visitors, it will attract more visitors if the Government develops the infrastructure.

The people here have urged local MLA Nurul Hussain and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee secretary and former MLA of the constituency, Dr Haren Das to allocate special funds under the State Government for the development of the historic temple.
