By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, June 20 Expressing dissatisfaction over the investigation into the incident of assault on members of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the State Legislative Assembly at the Nagaon Circuit House on May 29, the Gauhati High Court today directed the Government to hand over the case to the CID.

The court further directed that the investigation officer should be of the rank of a DSP, and that the investigations be monitored by an official of the rank of an IGP who may be appointed by the State DGP.

The court also granted interim bail to accused Safikul Islam and extended the interim bails of another two accused Nurul Huda and Manik Ali till July 18.

The court imposed restrictions on all of the accused.

The trio all Congress members and Zila Parishad office-bearers was allegedly involved in the assault on PAC members. The PAC members included MLAs Prasanta Phukan, Sirajuddin Ajmal and Inamul Mushahary.

The incident at the Nagaon Circuit House created widespread consternation as something unprecedented in the State. The Assembly also took a strong view of the developments and had an inquiry conducted. The role of the State Government which was accused of shielding the guilty also came under the scanner.

Advocate Niloy Dutta appeared on behalf of the accused while advocate Bijon Mahajan represented the complainants.
