Hailstorms damage 7,000 houses in Manipur

IMPHAL, April 25 - Massive hailstorms and incessant rains that hit Manipur in the past few days have damaged nearly 7,000 houses and other structures and flooded many areas in several parts of the State with Bishnupur district being the worst-hit district.

Thousands of people have remained marooned and hundreds of them have been left without shelters. Distribution of relief materials to the affected areas have started, authorities said.

The Manipur Government are making efforts to provide help to the people who have lost their houses and other properties in the hailstorms.

On April 23 night alone, 3,000 houses were damaged by hailstorm in Oinam and 2,000 in Nambol under Bishnupur where standing crops and vegetables over a vast area were also completely destroyed.

In Imphal West�s Wangoi area, 500 houses were completely damaged and 200 in Mayang Imphal and its surrounding villages. Several villages in Thoubal and Chandel districts were also ravaged by the hailstorms.

Nearly 200 houses were damaged by hail in Noney area of Tamenglong district. Reports said incessant rains that lashed the district in the past few days have triggered landslides on Imphal-Tamenglong road where many vehicles have remained stranded. Electric poles and large trees were uprooted by windstorm in several parts of the district.

Over 250 houses and farms in some parts of Imphal West and Imphal East have been submerged by flash floods completely throwing normal life out of gear.
