Hailakandi Rly Station upgraded

By Correspondent

HAILAKANDI, Dec 9 - The existing railway station here has been upgraded as B-grade station.

It was a long-pending demand of the local people to upgrade the station since quite sometime now. It may be mentioned here that after inauguration of the broadgauge railway track last year, no developmental works were undertaken in Hailakandi Railway Station, following which the local people were suffering a lot.

A trial engine was run recently on the track and witnessed by a large number of people. A two-member team of Rail Yatri Suraksha Samiti comprising Dipankar Dutta and Anindya Nath, BJP leader Hirakjyoti Chakraborty, Subrata Sarma Mazumdar, Nepal Chakraborty, Swapan Bhattacharjee, Swapan Paul, AGP leader Kamrul Islam Barbhuiya and social worker Manash Kanti Das, among others, were present on the occasion.

Senior Section Engineer of NF Railway, Nabajit Roy informed that after the inauguration of the Silchar-Bairabi (Assam-Mizoram) inter-State broadgauge railway track on May 27, 2016, there was only one track active for plying the train without platform and infrastructure, including power supply.

Now, both track No. 2 and 3 have become active and the inter-State train will run from these tracks. Roy said that basic amenities for the passengers will now be available in Hailakandis 100-year-old railway station.

He informed that facilities like online reservation system for passengers, waiting room, drinking water supply, toilets, 24x7 power supply etc have been installed in the station as per provisions of B-grade station.

Due to repeated intervention of the local people, including some BJP leaders in New Delhi, the deep-rooted conspiracy of some vested interest to degrade the old Hailakandi Railway Station has been unsuccessful, alleged the members of Rail Yatri Suraksha Samiti. They demanded plying of two passenger trains in the Silchar-Bairabi section via Hailakandi and also long-distance trains for the benefit of the local people.
