Hailakandi AIUDF seeks suspension of ZP chief

By Correspondent

HAILAKANDI, Aug 5 - The Hailakandi district committee of AIUDF has decided to suspend the chairperson of Hailakandi Zilla Parishad, Farhana Khanam Choudhury, from the party for allegedly switching over to the BJP by keeping the party in the dark.

The president of AIUDFs Hailakandi district committee, Afjal Hussain Laskar, said that Choudhury was elected from Rangauti-Nitainagar Zilla Parishad constituency in Hailakandi district as an AIUDF candidate in the Panchayat polls held last year.

Laskar said they have adopted a resolution to suspend Choudhury, which will be forwarded to the partys central committee for its approval.

Laskar said during the campaign for the Panchayat polls and even after her election, Choudhury had promised the electorate of her constituency that she will remain in the AIUDF forever.

Her decision to join the BJP has disheartened the voters, he said.

He alleged that the BJP inducted her into the party just to increase its presence in Hailakandi.

Favouring strong disciplinary action against her, Laskar said that Choudhurys decision to join the BJP has demoralised the AIUDF members and supporters.

Laskar said her decision to join the BJP will hamper development in Hailakandi district, particularly the rural areas.

Out of the 11 constituencies under Hailakandi Zilla Parishad, the AIUDF had won six seats, the BJP four and the AGP one in the 2018 polls.

Subsequently, the AIUDF formed the Zilla Parishad with Choudhury as the chairperson. The lone AGP member also extended support to the AIUDF.

Choudhury, accompanied by the local BJP leaders met the state BJP president on Saturday and formally joined the party. After that, the BJP claimed majority in the Zilla Parishad.

Hailakandi BJP president Subrata Nath said that Choudhury had resigned from the AIUDF following her selection as the Zilla Parishad chairperson last year and was running the affairs of the Zilla Parishad as an independent member.

Nath said she had formally joined the BJP in Guwahati on Saturday.

However, Choudhury was not available for her comments.
