Hagrama hints at fielding new faces BTC polls

By Correspondent

KOKRAJHAR, Jan 21 The BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary, who is also the president of the Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF), on Tuesday said that his party will give chance to new faces to contest the forthcoming elections to the council to be held in the last part of March.

Talking to media persons on the sidelines of the fourth annual convention of the Bodo National Conference (BNC) held at Bodofa Cultural Complex on Tuesday, Mohilary said that the BPF will bring new faces in some constituencies as per public demand. He said at least 10-15 fresh candidates would be fielded from the BPF in the coming elections.

Mohilary also expressed confidence that the BPF will get absolute majority in the forthcoming council elections and it will form the next Government. At the same time, he made it clear that the BPF will not go for alliance with any party and it will fight the elections alone. He said the Congress, the BJP and the newly-formed party of non-Bodo organisations, the Peoples Coordination for Democratic Rights (PCDR) have been trying to dethrone the BPF in the council.

Mohilary demanded that the Bodo villages outside the BTC be included in autonomous councils like Rabha Hasong, Tiwa, Mising, Karbi Anglong, etc., and opined that if the Government does not want to include the Bodo villages with these autonomous councils, then there should be separate autonomous councils for the Bodos outside the BTC.

Talking about the vexed insurgency issue, Mohilary said the Government of India should invite all the factions of the NDFB together to resolve their problems. He said both the NDFB (Ranjan Daimary) and the NDFB (Progressive) should be brought to the negotiation table at the same time. He said that there should not be any talk with a single faction of the militant outfit. He also appealed to the Songbijit faction of the NDFB to shun all kinds of violence and come forward to join the peace process with the Centre.

Earlier, Mohilary hoisted the flag to mark the beginning of the BNC convention. Veteran political leader and former MP Charan Narzary then offered floral tributes to the martyrs. The convention was attended by the leaders of all constituent bodies of the BNC. A number of important resolutions were also adopted in the convention.
