HAFLONG, Feb 26 Following destruction of water sources by the construction companies in the name of Mahasarak and BG, the entire populace in Haflong area is hit by acute water crisis.

Though Haflong is surrounded by several rivers and rivulets, but for the wanton collection of stones from river beds for construction works and disturbance in natural flow of rivers, the water sources are drying fast, thus causing water pollution and crisis in Haflong.

Dolong river, which is the prime source of water for the people in Haflong is totally polluted in the name of Mahasarak construction. However, the administration seems to be a silent spectator, perhaps due to the fact that people in the helm of affairs are not affected by the water crisis, observers here allege.

Moreover, the diminishing trend of rain perhaps due to global warming and increase in jhum cultivation have compounded the sufferings of the people. Water has become a rare commodity in some rural areas of the district. Some say, a long-term masterplan along with plantation of trees is very much required to solve the water crisis in Haflong.

People further opined, we want development, but not at the cost of environment. There should be checks and balances. The construction companies engaged in construction of Mahasarak and BG should not be allowed to destroy natural water sources, or be involved in wanton cutting of earth and collection of stones from the river beds, people here appealed.
