GUWAHATI, Oct 12 - Guwahati Football Club is gearing up for the second Division I-League in which they will face Mohammedan Sporting of Kolkata in the opening away match on November 14.
The team owner Sanjive Narain in a press conference here today informed that they have appointed former noted India players Subhash Bhowmick as the technical director of the team while Spaniard Anxo will be the chief coach.
Narain said they have already signed 26 players from Assam, Mizoram, Kolkata along with a couple of foreigners. They are trying to hook in players from Japan and Korea, informed Narain. The club has set up youth academy for junior age group in association with the Delhi based Anglian Management Group and a Brazilian club. Narain hoped that the Guwahati FC will excel in the meet and will qualify to the top tire.
Bhowmick, who had been a top ranking player of the Indian football in 1960s and 70s donning the colours of Kolkata giants and represented India on several occasions, said, it will be a big challenge for him to train the team. He said, he will pick local youngsters and selected players from Mizoram and Kolkata for the Guwahati FC which he hoped will qualify for the final round. The Northeast United Football Club famed Durga Boro also signed for the Club and he said it will be their duty to give 100 percent on and off the field for the team.
Assam Football Association secretary Ankur Dutta said it will be a 11-team championship and Guwahati FC has been clubbed with Md Sporting, Gangtok Himalayas SC, Fateh Hyderabad FC and Neroca FC, Imphal. Top three teams from each group will qualify for the final round.
The practice session of the Club will kick start on October 14 at the Nehru Stadium here.
