Guv promises to act as catalyst for development

GUWAHATI, Nov 18 - Governor Banwarilal Purohit said that he has been touring extensively since he took over in order to get first-hand assessment of the developmental activities, besides the law and order situation prevailing in different parts of the State, an official release received here stated.

Addressing mediapersons after emerging from a series of meetings with officials of the district and police administration, representatives of political parties and members of the public at the Deputy Commissioner�s Conference Hall at Hailakandi on Thursday, Governor Purohit said he has all along been reviewing the developmental activities in different districts, including Barak Valley to know first-hand the issues and problems so that they can be resolved and developmental activities geared up.

�This exercise is being done to resolve the problems plaguing development and to find ways to accelerate the pace of welfare-related works,� he said.

Calling upon the journalists to contribute towards nation building, Purohit said, �You have an important role to play in contributing to the development process by highlighting the issues in proper perspective.�

Underscoring the need to fight corruption, Purohit called upon the mediapersons to extend full support to Prime Minister Narendra Modi�s mission to weed out black money and to take the country along the road to glory and prosperity.

The Governor praised Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for his relentless efforts to usher in all-round development in the State. �You have a dynamic, honest and forthright Chief Minister who has been working day in and day out to usher in change. His quest for development has impressed me a lot. You too must lend support to the Chief Minister to bring about development,� he added.

Purohit said that he would pitch in his efforts as Governor to bring about development in Assam through his rapport with different Union ministries. �Whatever help I can render, I will continue to do so to bring about development in Assam,� he added.

The Governor, while pointing out the paucity of doctors and employees in different departments in Hailakandi district, assured to take up the matter in right earnest at appropriate levels. Purohit said he had asked the Deputy Commissioner to focus on trimming the school dropout rate to attain 100 per cent literacy. He expressed his satisfaction over the slew of initiatives taken up by the district administration to maintain cleanliness under the Swachh Bharat Abhijan.

Purohit promised that he would take up the issue at the highest level on the defunct Hindustan Paper Corporation�s Cachar Paper Mill at Panchgram.

�I am given to understand by the district administration that the paper mill is on the verge of closure, which would throw many out of employment. I will personally take up the matter at the highest level.�

Secretary to Governor, Gokul Mohan Hazarika and Deputy Commissioner Moloy Bora were present on the occasion.
