GUWAHATI, Nov 14 - Governor PB Acharya has advocated use of ayurvedic and alternative medicines for treatment of various ailments. He was speaking at a World Diabetes Day programme organised here today.

Acharya added that India has the potential to become a great nation with minimum health issues as it has inherited a very rich culture and scientific traditional practices. He said yoga is one of the best ways to stay healthy, and it has no link to any religion, said a statement.

People should lay stress on yoga and other physical activities. I would like to tell the students to avoid junk food that leads to many illnesses, he added.

Earlier in the morning, a diabetes rally was taken out from the Nehru Stadium to the Guwahati Medical College auditorium. It was inaugurated by Arjuna Award winner Bhogeswar Barua and popular Assamese actress Nishita Goswami. Students from different schools joined the rally.

We have been conducting the events for the last several years. Our intention is to create awareness among the masses, especially the youths and school students so that we can fight diabetes, said NEDS general secretary Sanjib Medhi.
