NAGAON, June 12 � The Governor of Assam, PB Acharya paid a visit to Nagaon on June 10 to attend the second foundation day of the Mahapurush Shreemanta Sankardev University. In his address, the Governor who is the visitor of the University called upon the educated people of the country to work for the development of our India. He observed that 30 per cent of Indian scientists working in NASA, 10 per cent of the richest people of the globe are Indians but most of the Indians are illiterate, and there is no Bill Gates in India.
Before Independence, the foreign aggressors like Mughals, British etc., came to India only to loot our treasury and after Independence, Indians are looting their own people, the Governor added.
He further said that India has a rich language like Sanskrit. For physical and mental development, India has yoga but we are neglecting these traditions � we accept those if some foreigners praise them. He criticised this attitude of the society as well as its love for the English medium.
He called upon the universities not only to produce some highly educated persons but to produce true human beings who work for the society, for the country. A university should not only be a centre of knowledge, it should be a centre of development also, he added.
�We have the ideals of Srimanta Sankardeva before us. Those should be translated properly for the well being of our people. India�s main enemies are corruption, insurgency, discrimination on the basis of caste, creed, gender etc. All the people including the educated ones should fight against these�, the Governor added.
The Chancellor of the university, Padadhikar Bhabendra Nath Deka presented a brief history of the university and its present status. The VC, Dr KK Deka presented his welcome address.
First lady Kabita Acharya, Nagaon DC Monalisa Goswami, registrar Dr Ratul Ch Bora, secretary of the Shrimanta Sankardeva Sangha, Babul Bora, SP Arabinda Kalita and other dignitaries were present.
Borgeet, the university anthem and other cultural items were also presented. The Governor also met the teachers and students of the university.
