GUTA stir over anomalies from today

By staff reporter

GUWAHATI, April 23 The Gauhati University Teachers Association (GUTA) has stuck to its decision to go for a three-day agitational programme from tomorrow in protest against the anomalies on the part of the GU administration. The agitational programme of the teachers association includes blockade of the office of the GU Vice Chancellor and boycott of classes and examination-related duties.

When contacted on the matter, GU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof O K Medhi told The Assam Tribune that the GUTA allegations would be placed before the Executive Council (EC) of the University, which is meeting tomorrow. The decision of the EC on the matter would be binding on all the parties concerned, the VC said.

While explaining their stand GUTA general secretary Dr Akhil Ranjan Dutta told The Assam Tribune this evening that the GU authorities, including the V C and the Registrar, have violated the GU Act and rules for their personal gains. As for example, Dutta said, the VC has used the office of the GU Chancellor to derive undue benefit in case of his re-employment as a professor after the completion of his tenure as the Vice Chancellor of the University. This is sheer violation of the GU Re-employment Rules, 2008.

Moreover, the GU Registrar is allegedly using two different sets of rules University Grants Commission Rules and the Common Pay Committee Rules to derive financial benefits, the GUTA general secretary said.

The GU authorities have also failed to check financial irregularities that have been widely reported in the media.

He also informed that the GUTA submitted a petition to the GU Chancellor on April 20 urging for steps to institute an inquiry into the above irregularities. The GUTA has also demanded an opportunity to present and substantiate its views on the above issues at the GU EC meeting being held tomorrow, the GUTA general secretary said.
