Gunmen abduct driver from train

HAILAKANDI, Oct 21 � Sensation prevailed throughout Barak Valley following the kidnapping of a driver and assistant driver of Bairabi (Mizoram) bound inter-state passenger train by unidentified gunmen at 9.30 p.m last night in Hailakandi district. Railway sources informed that a team of 5-6 unidentified gunmen suspected to be members of Reang outfit United Democratic Liberation Army (UDLA) boarded the it after stopping it at Assam-Mizoram bordering Ramnathpur area of Hailakandi district showi ng sophisticated weapons. They forcefully took away the driver Tarun Kumar Bhattacharjee and assistant driver SK Sharma. The gunmen spared the security guard of the engine, Sibul Das, who reported the incident to the NF Railway Mazdoor Union over phone immediately.

Later in the midnight, the assistant driver SK Sharma managed to escape from the clutches of the kidnappers and went to Badarpur Railway station for shelter.

After kidnappping, three teams of security personnel comprising police and paramilitary forces rushed to the spot and started massive search operation in the jungles of Assam-Mizoram bordering areas. The Hailakandi district administration sources informed that the all steps have been taken to rescue the kidnapped railway official.

The members of NF Railway Mazdoor Union and local people of Badarpur Railway Station blocked the railway track at night demanding the unconditional release of the driver. The agitated Railway employees also stopped the Agartala-Lumding passenger train at Badarpur and demanded to ensure the safety and security of the Railway employees working in the vulnerable places.

Railway sources informed that the NF Railway authorities had issued an instruction on August 22 to run the train slowly in the Assam-Mizoram bordering Ramnathpur area as the area is accident prone. The unidentified gunmen boarded the train taking the advantage of the slow speed of the train and entered the engine, security guard Sibul Das informed police.
