Gun snatcher apprehended

By Correspondent

TURA, July 26 - Ahidul Islam (35) of Nandichar village under the Mahendraganj Police Station in South West Garo Hills, whose disappearance led to a mob attack on the PS, was arrested today.

Islam, who had snatched an INSAS rifle from a policeman before running from the spot, informed the police that he had thrown the gun into the floodwaters. A search for the gun is on. The accused is allegedly mentally challenged.

On July 21, Islam had attacked pedestrians at Nandichar. When the police tried to intervene, he attacked them. A policeman fell into floodwaters while trying to evade the attack. While he tried to get back on his feet, the accused got hold of his gun which he then pointed to the policemen.

A sub-inspector threatened to shoot Islam following which he fled the spot.

The next day, fuelled by rumours of the police killing Islam, a mob attacked the Mahendraganj PS and many vehicles were damaged. The police had to open blank fire to disperse the crowd.
