Agartala, March 11 (IANS): A Mizoram-based guerrilla was killed in a shootout with police in Tripura, an officer said here on Sunday.

Police said that the slain militant had came from the neighbouring Mizoram to collect ransom from villagers in northern Tripura.

"Acting on a tip-off, a police contingent launched a combing operation in remote areas of Kanchanpur, bordering Mizoram. During the hunt Saturday night, tribal guerrillas fired on the security forces from a hill top and the latter retaliated killing a militant," a Tripura Police spokesman told reporters.

The slain rebel was identified as Jasem Malsum, 25. He belonged to the Mizoram-based separatist outfit Bru National Liberation Front (BNLF), police said.

A mobile phone and a gun was recovered near the body.
