GU Executive Council to move Governor

GUWAHATI, May 3 � The Executive Council (EC) of Gauhati University (GU) today told the members of the GU Teachers� Association (GUTA) that it would meet the Governor of the State, who is also the Chancellor of the University, to secure the financial concurrence to the proposal of enhancement of the superannuation age of the GU teacher to 65 years.

According to GUTA general secretary Akhil Ranjan Dutta, GU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof O K Medhi, who is the chairperson of the EC made the above assurance in presence of the other EC members.

The VC also told the GUTA members, who were gheraoing the EC members while they were holding their meeting at the GU campus here today, between 11 am and 2 pm, that the EC would also meet the next Chief Minister as soon as the next Government is formed, on the issue.

The GUTA members took recourse to the above agitational programme in support of their seven demands for enhancement of the superannuation age to 65 years, new re-employment scheme, filling up of vacancies in GU regular PG departments, promotion under career advancement scheme (CAS), updating the provident fund (PF), release of the gratuity and other retirement benefits including pension and retrospective effect in promotion.

GUTA general secretary said that the GU EC has by this time accepted the GUTA demand for enhancement of the superannuation age of the GU teachers to 65 years, Dutta said.

On the issue of the new re-employment scheme, the EC said that now on re-employment would be done for five years at a time immediately after retirement of the teachers. And this would be applicable uniformly to all, covering even those who are already serving under the re-employment scheme.

The GU EC has assured measures to expedite the process of filling up the vacancies in the regular PG departments of the University. The process will be completed within the next six months, the VC told the GUTA members.

On the issue of promotion under the CAS, the VC told the GUTA members that the CAS would be implemented as per the UGC rules and the process for promotion under the CAS would be completed within six months of receiving the individual applications.

He also told the GUTA members that the PF deposits would be updated and the issue of interest on the PF amount would be negotiated by the GU authorities with the State Bank of India authorities to facilitate much benefit to the GUTA members etc.

The GU EC also assured release of the leave encashment amounts to the GUTA members just after the retirement of the individual members of the Association. It also assured that the process of gratuity payment would be expedited.

A three-member committee has been constituted by the EC to look into the matter of giving retrospective effect in promotion, the VC told the GUTA members.

Dutta said that the GUTA has demanded that the report of the above committee should be submitted at the earliest.
