GUWAHATI, Dec 31 Gauhati Town Club (GTC), the premier sports institution of the State, is planning to set up a badminton training centre which will kick-start on January 7.

Former SAF Games gold medallist Oli Deka has been engaged as the chief coach for the centre billed as GTC Badminton Centre. The GTC has already completed an indoor hall with hova court.

Informing about the schemes taken by the GTC, general secretary Devojit Saikia said, initially they will start the centre with 25 young students.

The GTC already has cricket centre, football academy, chess foundation, taekwondo school and swimming centre. The club will start a shooting range soon.

Saikia revealed that the Ramesh Baruah Invitation Cricket Tournament will start from January 2 with eight top ranking teams of the State. This tournament will be followed by Corporate Champions League. They will also host the Maharshi Bora Trophy inter school (U-17) cricket championship from April 20.

The GTC officials this year skipped the Christmas eve and the New Years eve functions as a mark of respect to the departed souls of the victims in BTAD killings. They also decided to donate materials worth Rs 50,000 to the inmates in the relief camps.

Saikia, further opined that the playing condition of the Judges Field has deteriorated during last year mainly because of non implementation of the rules and regulations framed by the Judges Field Maintenance Committee. The GTC has appealed the authority to take necessary steps so that the ground condition could be improved.
