GTC, Sunrise in safe zone

GUWAHATI, Sept 19 - Gauhati Town Club (GTC) and Sunrise Athletic Club are in safe zone as far relegation to the A Division is concerned.

In two relegation group matches of the RG Baruah Super Division Football League at the Nehru Stadium here today, GTC edged past struggling Food Corporation of India (FCI) SC 1-0 while Sunrise humbled Ganga SC 2-0.

On the first ground, Ningthoujam Binan saved the day for Town scoring the lone goal in the 40th minute.

Nigerian striker Olaniram Joseph sent a cross to Ningthoujam who promptly shot home. In the later part of the match they created several openings but Town frontliners Lenin Angom, Olaniram and Ningthoujam squandered the easy scoring opportunities.

FCI striker Samujal Rabha missed an easy sitter when he failed to head home from a close range off a David Gayary centre in the 80th minute.

On the second ground, Francis put Sunrise ahead in the 21st minute while substitute Minisrang Narzary made it 2-0 in the 27th minute.

Sunrise today played a better game and forced the opponent to fall back. Their team work was satisfactory and managed to put ample pressure at the Ganga goal area.

With today�s win both GTC and Sunrise gathered 10 points each while FCI and Ganga are in the trouble zone with four points each. All the teams have two more matches to play.

Earlier, FC Green Valley defeated Navajyoti Club 1-0 in the last match of the preliminary round. Michael Lucky netted the match winning goal. Green Valley claimed the top slot with 14 points while Navajyoti are in the second spot with 14 points. NF Rly and ASEB are at the third and fourth positions with 12 points each.

Today�s matches: Green Valley vs NF Rly; ASEB vs Navajyoti (both Champions Round).
