GTC school chess meet

GUWAHATI, June 19 � The GTC Chess Foundation will be organising the GTC School Chess Championship from July 11 to 13 to mark the completion of a successful year since its launch in July last year. The tournament has a total cash prize of Rs 30,000 and is open to all school students of Assam upto class XII.

The best school will be awarded with a cash prize of Rs 10,000 while the school with the maximum number of participating students gets the Best Participating Trophy and cash prize of Rs 5,000. Besides, the top five position holders in the tournament will also go home richer by Rs 5000, Rs 4000, Rs 3000, Rs 2000 and Rs 1000 respectively.

However the main attraction of the tournament is that the top 5 position holders in the main category will be provided free advance chess training under International Master and former Commonwealth Championship Atanu Lahiri of West Bengal. The last date of participation is July 5. Participation forms may be collected from the Gauhati Town Club office during work hours on weekdays. Interested schools and players may also contact Biswajit Bhardwaj, Director, GTC Chess Foundation, stated a press release.Opener Murali Vijay was hit on his right forefinger by a local fast bowler on the nets on Friday and after viewing the two practice pitches, the Indian team decided not to use local net bowlers at all yesterday.
