By A Sports reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 8 - The Gauhati Town Club registered their first win in the RG Baruah Super Division League at the Nehru Stadium here today as the maroon brigade edged past debutante Ganga Sports Club by a solitary goal.

With this win GTC moved to the fifth place in the standings with 5 points in 5 matches. Navajyoti Club lead the table with 11 points followed by NFRSC, FC Green Valley and ASEBSC.

After their shocking win over Sunrise AC in the debut match, Ganga failed to hold on to their rhythm garnering just 4 points from 5 outings.

Striker Olaniran Joseph, a foreign recruit, scored the all important goal for GTC in the 24th minute of the match when he fruitfully utilised a long pass from the midfield after the Ganga defenders failed to clear the ball to safety.

The game started with both the sides making repeated forays into each others territory.

Apart from this lone goal there was no real chance for both despite the two teams counter attacking, in the first half.

Ganga created several attempts to find an equaliser right into the second half but in vain. There was a real chance for them to level the score in the 58th minute when central defender Johny Lalrinzualas powerful 40- yard shot was saved by a diving Amit Lodh, the GTC custodian.

In between Gangas back to back attacks, the GTC flaundered a decent chance in the 81st minute when skipper Lenin Agnos shot, off a deft pass from Temjenwati Long Kumar, was nicely saved. Desperate attempts were made by Ganga left and right flanks although the GTC boys kept their nerves cool to keep themselves in the lead.

Big win for AP Blues in A Division: It was another big win for the Assam Police Blues in the Jibeswar Goswami A Division League on Tuesday as they thrashed Kamrupa FC 5-0.
