GUWAHATI, July 3 � A rusty looking Gauhati Town Club (GTC) edged out Rising XI 1-0 in the opening match of Nripendra Narayan Bhattacharya Football Tournament, organised by Guwahati Sports Association, at the Nehru Stadium here today. The match-winning goal was scored by Ananda Singh in the 19th minute. By virtue of today�s win, GTC entered into the quarterfinals where they will play against ASEB on July 9.
Town skipper Tomba Singh set the ball for Ananda off a free kick and Ananda made no mistake in heading home from inside the box. Both the teams were disorganised in making moves. The midfielders in particular could not show their skills. The Rising players were more agile in made the Town defenders sweat it out. Robin Boro should have restored parity mid way in the second session. But he missed the net from the penalty area.
The tournament was inaugurated today by former footballer Rabi Saha. The death of Biman Kar of Young Blue Club was condoled before the start of the match.
