GTC chess: Day 2 sees major upsets

GUWAHATI, July 12 � The second day of the Moserbaer GTC School Chess Championship saw some major upsets on the top boards as top seeded Rishideep Bordoloi of DPS Duliajan was defeated by Rituraj Borgohain of St Xaviers School, Duliajan in the 4th round game and 3rd seed Dipu Pradhan was held to a draw by 14th seed Debanga K Bhattacharyya of DPS, Guwahati.

Debanga K Bhattacharyya proved his mettle again in the 5th round when he defeated Pranjit Kalita of Gandhi Smriti School, Mangaldai in a keenly contested match on the 3rd board. The top two table games in the 5th round ended in draws after a long fought battle of wits.

On the 4th board, Nitish Das of Faculty School, Guwahati got the better of Aryan Sonowal of DPS, Duliajan while Rishideep Bordoloi escaped another scare as he managed to squeeze a win against Divyanga Spondon Baruah of DPS, Duliajan in a long fought game which lasted for 3 hours.

At the end of 5 rounds, 5 players � Nitish Das of Faculty School, Maheswata Kumar of Mangaldoi Town HS School, Kaustav Kashyap Das of Srimanta Sankar Academy and Rituraj Borgohain of St Xaviers HS School, Duliajan were leading the tournament with 4.5 points each. They were followed by by a pack of 9 players on 4 points each.

The tournament will come to an end on July 13 evening with the prize distribution ceremony slated to be held at 8 pm, states a press release.
