GTC Challenge Football from Sept 8

GUWAHATI, Aug 27 � Gauhati Town Club (GTC) will host the 5th edition of the GTC Challenge Football Championship at Judges� Field here from September 5.

Informing this in a press conference today, GTC general secretary Devajit Saikia said this time they will conduct the championship with 16 leading teams of the northeastern region and a team from Mohun Bagan Club of Kolkata.

Saikia revealed that most likely Mohun Bagan Club�s academy team will be featured in the meet. Invitation have been sent to top teams of Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur and Assam. The teams have virtually confirmed to participate, the GTC secretary said.

He further said, lucrative prize-money and gifts will be given to top teams and individuals. But Saikia did not disclosed about the amount of prize-money as some sponsors are yet to confirm about their commitment.

GTC, the premier sporting institution of the State is planning to improve the standard of its cricket team. With that intention they have already signed an MoU with City Cricket Academy of Leicester, England. Format Assam Ranji player Anshuman Bhagawati is one of the premier member of the academy which promised to help GTC in grooming cricketers. The English academy will run cricket camps at GTC with their coaches during school holidays here. GTC will send two youngsters every year to their academy for higher training and the players will be given fellowship which will be after the name of Maharshi Bora who died recently. Bora was a former State cricketer and vice president of GTC.

Saikia said they will arrange exchange programme annually. A GTC team will play a series of matches in UK and a team from the Leisester academy will visit the city.
