TURA, Sept 8 - The Garo Students Union (GSU), western zone today staged a protest rally demanding exclusion of non-tribals from voting or contesting in the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections in the town of Dadenggre in West Garo Hills.

The rally was attended by over 2,000 people who claimed that the council is for the determination of tribal rights only. The rally was also attended by many other local NGOs.

The demand for exclusion of non-tribals from the Council polls has been there for a long time now, with most NGOs stating that they would boycott the upcoming polls if non-tribals are allowed to contest or vote in the elections.

We are determined to continue our agitation until our demand for exclusion of non-tribals from the poll process is met. The 6th Schedule is meant for determination of tribals and needs to be kept that way. We received overwhelming support from the villagers of the area and it gives us mental strength to continue the fight, said Rupa Marak, president of the GSU western zone unit.

The GSU (interim body) is set to take the fight further with a sit-in demonstration tomorrow in front of the offices of the DCs of the various districts within the region, said GSU interim body president Zikku BN Marak.
