GSU chief arrested on abduction charge

TURA, Aug 30 � The president of the Garo Students� Union was arrested for his role in the abduction of a union leader who was rescued by police from the GSU office today. The general secretary of the Tura Government College Students� Union, Nikman Ch Marak, was forcibly taken away by GSU members in the GSU president�s vehicle in the afternoon. Nikman was assaulted and locked up inside the office after he allegedly sought fresh elections to the union body that has been pending for sometime now. Nikman�s abduction caused anger and hundreds of college boys went on the rampage targeting the GSU office. The once powerful Garo Students� Union leadership fled for their lives as dozens of college students, some armed with lathis, marched to the GSU office at Chasingre, on the outskirts of Tura.
