Green Valley maintain top spot

GUWAHATI, Sept 20 - FC Green Valley maintained the top position in the RG Baruah Super Division Football League.

In a keenly contested Championship Round match at the Nehru Stadium here today, Green Valley posted a hard-fought 2-1 victory against NF Railway Sports Club. With today�s win Green Valley team has collected 19 points with two more matches to go.

In the other match of the day, ASEB Sports Club played 2-2 draw against Navajyoti Club on the second ground.

The NF Railway-Green Valley match was quite entertaining as both the teams adopted attacking tactics on a slushy ground. After the dry first session Jeelendra Brahma gave NF Railway advantage in the 64th minute. Skipper Sibra Narzary fed Jeelendra inside the box who beat the opponent goalkeeper Samarsing Brahma with a sliding. But the Green Valley boys were not in a mood to surrender and put up a spirited show after conceding the goal. Michael Lucky levelled the score line in the 78th minute deflecting a set piece taken by Bijoy Gohain. The ball came to George Prince who deflected it to Michael. The Nigerian striker put the ball into the goal with a mild header.

George scored the winning goal for Green Valley in the 83rd minute with a solo effort. Receiving the ball at the top of the box he dribbled past a couple of railway defenders and finally the custodian keeping his cool. The ASEB-Navajyoti match was also closely played. Navajyoti went ahead in the 15th minute when Timothy Onyenka found the target.

ASEB hit back in the 39th minute through Jwmbla Brahma. They went 2-1 ahead in the 76th minute when Sanatumba Sarma fired home from a close range.

However, finally they could not guard their fort as medio Gorachand Marandi drew parity in the 83rd minute.
