Green house effect behind climate change

By Ajit Patowary

GUWAHATI, March 9 - Pre-monsoon maximum (day) and minimum (night) temperatures, during the current month, are on the rise in several places of the NE region this time. These places have recorded above normal maximum and minimum temperatures during the current month, demonstrating a remarkable change in the weather condition.

Sources at the Borjhar-based Regional Meteorology Centre (RMC) attribute this situation to various factors, including, among others, the green house effect.

Guwahati today recorded a maximum temperature of 32 degree Celsius, against its normal of 29 degree Celsius for the period in this regard. It also recorded a minimum temperature of 16.5 degree Celsius, against its normal of 15 degree Celsius for the period in this regard.

As the 30-year average worked out by the meteorologists, basing on the weather data available for the 30-year period between 1971 and 2000 AD, the city should normally record a maximum temperature of 29 degree Celsius till March 11. From March 12 to 16, it should record a maximum temperature of 30 degree Celsius and from March 17 to April 25, it should record a maximum temperature of 31 degree Celsius.

It may be mentioned here that in the end part of April, the city maximum temperature shoots up to 36 degree Celsius to 37 degree Celsius.

The RMC forecast says that tomorrow the city will record a maximum temperature of 34 degree Celsius and a minimum temperature of 18 degree Celsius.

Shillong today recorded a maximum temperature of 23.8 degree Celsius, which was 3.8 degree Celsius above its normal for the period in this regard.

Kohima today recorded a maximum temperature of 23.7 degree Celsius, which was 3.7 degree Celsius above its normal for the period in this regard.

Cherrapunji today recorded a maximum temperature of 23.5 degree Celsius, which was 3.5 degree Celsius above its normal for the period in this regard.

Agartala today recorded a maximum temperature of 34.8 degree Celsius, which was 3.8 degree Celsius above its normal for the period in this regard, said the RMC sources.

However, due to overcast conditions, Pasighat recorded a maximum temperature of 21.6 degree Celsius, against its normal of 25 degree Celsius for the period in this regard. Likewise, other parts of Arunachal Pradesh and some parts of Assam like North Lakhimpur, which are located in the neighbourhood of this hill state, have recorded below normal maximum temperature and significantly their minimum temperatures are also found to be above normal. This indicates that the gaps between their respective maximum and minimum temperatures have also fallen, because of the overcast conditions, RMC sources said.

It needs mention here that the findings of many research works on global warming state that the global temperature has gone up by 1.8 degree Celsius to 2 degree Celsius during the past about 30 years.
