Govt yet to make stand clear on Majuli revised dossier

By AJIT PATOWARY

GUWAHATI, July 17 The Assam Government is yet to make its position known in matters related to the preparation of the revised nomination dossier for wresting the UNESCO World Heritage Site status to river island Majuli. The Archaeological Survey of India handed over the responsibility of preparing the islands revised dossier to the Assam Government last year. The State Government was asked to engage a consultant for the purpose.

ASI Director General Prabin Srivastav told former MP and chairman of the voluntary organisation Majuli Island Protection and Development Council Dr Arun Sarma today that the Assam Government is yet to make its position known in response to the above ASI stand on the matter. The ASI is shortly going to take a final decision on the matter, the ASI DG told Dr Sarma.

Reliable sources claim that the Central Government handed over the responsibility of preparing the revised nomination dossier of the island to the State Government in view of the changes effected by the UNESCO in the operational guidelines and the requirements thereof. But when enquired about, senior State Government officials connected with the campaign stated that they were not aware of this development.
