Govt to prepare authentic NRC

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 30 Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rakibul Hussain today told the Assembly that the process for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) had taken into consideration all the related aspects, and that if there was still any drawback, the government would rectify it at the earliest if brought to its notice.

We want to prepare an authentic and foolproof NRC, which will have the names of all genuine Indian citizens. As of now, 90 per cent of the residents have their names in the NRC. We have also received some complaints and those are being addressed, he said.

Hussain urged all concerned, especially the political parties, to desist from doing politics with the NRC, adding, cooperation from all parties was critical to ensuring a foolproof NRC.

AR Khan (AIUDF) alleged that the ongoing NRC updating process had flaws and that people having their names in it were being shown as D voters in the updated NRC. He demanded an inquiry into it.

Hussain said the NRC cannot contain D voters, and the matter would be looked into. He further said some people were trying to make matters complicated, but the government was committed to updating an authentic NRC.
