GUWAHATI, Jan 4 For the first time in the State, two special task forces have been set up by the district administration at the instance of the State Government to nail the land mafia operating in and around the capital city.

Special official warning has also been passed for the first time to identify and act against those police and revenue department officials operating at the behest of land mafia.

Of the two task forces constituted, while the district-level task force would be headed by the Additional Deputy Commissioner, the thana-level task force would be led by the revenue officer.

The task forces have also been asked to identify those police and revenue department officials involved in such cases so that action could be taken against them along with the land grabbers.

An official of the rank of additional superintendent of police, besides some other senior-level police officers have also been attached with each of the task forces.

A closed-door meeting held at the office of the District Commissioner (DC), Metro, which was also attended by Inspector General of Police (Central Western Range) Pallav Bhattacharya, also chalked out plans to facilitate quick disposal of the pending land grabbing cases, which is witnessing an unprecedented rise.

Kamrup DC (Metro) Ashutosh Agnihotri told The Assam Tribune, We have come across reports indicating connivance of police and revenue departments with the land grabbers. It is a growing menace and the Government is very serious about it. Anyone found involved in such cases would be brought to book.

During the meeting, the task forces have been asked to review the status of the land grabbing cases in and around the district. The task forces have also been asked to file reports concerning any land grabbing case, the DC stated, adding, The status of all the cases would be reviewed by the district administration fortnightly.

Agnihotri, who took special initiative in addressing a complaint filed by a doctor couple alleging grabbing of their land by land mafia under Basistha Police Station, further urged the people to come forward with their grievances so that the menace could be wiped out.

It needs mention that the Dispur Circle Officer Nabadeka Bora was also suspended in this connection a couple of days back.
