Govt reverifying criminal antecedents of Bangla nationals

By SANJOY RAY

GUWAHATI, July 8 - In view of the latest threat perception, security agencies in Assam have been asked to reverify the criminal antecedents of the Bangladeshi nationals detained in Assam in the recent past.

This comes close on the heels of the recent attacks masterminded in Bangladesh by the Jamaat-ul Mujaheedin, Bangladesh (JMB) and threat inputs received by the Indian security agencies.

Well-placed sources told this reporter that the Assam Police, in coordination with other security agencies, has detained nearly 100 suspected Bangladeshis since April 1 this year and although the standard operating procedure was already followed, the recent threat percept and the string of violent activities reported across the world by the radical groups has necessitated a re-check.

In recent months, nearly 100 suspected Bangladeshi nationals have been detained, which means that on an average every day a suspected element is being detained in Assam. We want to reassure ourselves that these elements are not part of a criminal conspiracy against the State and the country as a whole, sources said.

There is no harm in being extra cautious, especially when it is related to nations security from external forces. We would assess the recent detentions only, the source added.

The Ministry of Home Affairs too has asked the State Police to raise the alert level in view of the threat percept, especially in the areas bordering Bangladesh.

Sources in the Border Security Force informed this reporter that vigil has already been enhanced and riverine domination too has been increased.
